Dr. Gul Karagoz (she/her) is a dedicated infectious disease specialist with a strong passion for public health and health equity. She is currently a fellow in the Vanderbilt LGBTQ+ Healthcare Fellowship Program, where she provides compassionate, affirming care in the LGBTQ+ clinic and HIV clinic, focusing on improving access to inclusive healthcare for marginalized communities.
Dr. Karagoz's medical journey began in Turkey, where she earned her medical degree from Ataturk University College of Medicine in Erzurum. She completed her residency in Infectious Diseases at Dr. Lutfi Kirdar Kartal Training Hospital in Istanbul, gaining extensive experience in diagnosing and treating complex infections. After residency, Dr. Karagoz worked as an attending infectious disease physician in Turkey for over a decade, providing patient care and contributing to public health.
In 2018, she moved to the United States to further her career. She first worked as a Research Fellow in Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, contributing to scientific advancements in the field. Later, she continued her clinical training as a Clinical Fellow in Infectious Diseases at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she gained hands-on experience managing a wide range of infectious diseases.
Throughout her career, Dr. Karagoz has authored 33 peer-reviewed articles in the field of infectious diseases, contributing to the scientific understanding of various conditions and treatment approaches. Additionally, she has presented over 100 posters at professional conferences, sharing her research and clinical expertise with the broader medical community.
With years of expertise in infectious diseases, Dr. Karagoz chose to pursue the LGBTQ+ Healthcare Fellowship at Vanderbilt to better understand the unique healthcare needs of LGBTQ+ individuals and to integrate HIV care into a more inclusive healthcare model.
Her work combines clinical expertise, advocacy, and a commitment to health equity. Through her dedication to improving LGBTQ+ and HIV care, Dr. Karagoz continues to bridge gaps in healthcare access and enhance patient outcomes.
